to build a 1945 Megow Models
PERKY
UC speed model. As you can see from the pictures, this comes from my original vintage blueprint.
In the late 1940s, following World War II, model engines soon became available and GIs came home to enjoy building models again. Megow models were some of the best kits to become available at that time.
Pop often talked about getting a
BANTAM SPECIAL
kit when he was a boy and the enjoyment of using it for one of his Ohlsson & Rice .23s. That model is still hanging in the ceiling of the workshop.
In time Megow came out with the
PERKY
,
which did not feature the heavy, precarved fuselage halves
. It, too, called for a Bantam .19. The fuselage was planked with sheet balsa that produced a much lighter model. Over the years there have been many speed and distance contests with all participants building a
PERKY
. Some years back there was even a "postal" contest for
PERKY
flyers where everyone certified his speed and distance obtained on a specific size fuel tank and mailed in the results. Yes, those were the days!
The picture of the battered
PERKY
(picture #6) was sent by a British customer who found it in an estate sale and was restoring it to its original glory.
My last picture is of both the
PERKY
plan and the
BANTAM SPECIAL
plan to show how identical they are (except for a carved fuselage on the
BANTAM SPECIAL
). Also, see the
PERKY
parts patterns sheet peeking out on the left side of the picture.
